The Polar Researcher

The "Polar Investigator" is a hand-carved root wood pipe with an inlaid real northpole winter-Snowflake from 88 ° N, that I made for my wife Helene. "A decent polar explorer needs a pipe, it warms your hands and looks cool!" With this phrase, she also gave me a pipe before leaving for the MOSAiC expedition. This project could only be realised by the preparation of my esteemed colleague and good friend Hannes Laubach. He brought wood pieces for pipe carving with him, in case we should get bored during a storm or in the evening. Overall, due to the CoV-19 pandemic, we were on expedition for 9 months instead of 5 months and we had some fun evenings together. After work, we were able to let the creativity run free in our workshop container.

Die "The Polarinvestigator" ist eine handgeschnitzte Wurzelholzpfeife mit eingelegter echter Nordpol-Winter-Schneeflocke von 88 °N die ich für meine Frau Helene gemacht habe. Sie sagte zu mir: "Ein guter Polarforscher braucht eine Pfeife, das wärmt die Hände und sieht cool aus!". Mit diesem Satz, hat auch sie mir eine Pfeife vor Abfahrt zur MOSAiC Expedition geschenkt. Nur durch die vorausschauende Vorbereitung meines geschätzten Kollegen und guten Freund Hannes Laubach konnte dieses Projekt entstehen. Er brachte Pfeifen-Rohlinge mit zum selber schnitzen mit, falls uns bei Sturm oder abends mal langweilig werden sollte. Insgesamt waren wir aufgrund der CoV-19 Pandemie 9 Monate anstatt 5 Monate unterwegs und wir hatten einige lustige Abende zusammen. In unserem Werkstattcontainer konnten wir dann nach Feierabend unserer Kreativität freien lauf zu lassen.
